A Will is a relatively inexpensive legal document that allows you to specify to whom your estate goes to when you pass away.
If you die without a Will:
- The government will make the decisions for you and if no heir can be found, the provincial government takes all,
- Someone would have to apply to the Court for the right to administer your estate causing huge expenses and unnecessary delays,
- Liquidation of assets to cash may be forced regardless of market conditions causing financial hardship or the loss of family heirlooms due to a sale.

Executor
When you are planning to Make-a-Will, you should give careful consideration as to who will be your Executor. At the same time, decide who should be an alternate Executor in case the first Executor cannot act for any reason. It is important that you ask the intended Executor(s) if they will act for you.
See either/both of our White Papers "Executor Duties" or "Choosing an Executor"
Guardian
If you have a young family, you should also consider a person to act as Guardian to raise your minor children. It is important that you ask the intended Guardian(s) if they will act for you.
